Uses for Rosemary Oil To Boost Our Performance Proven By Research

Rosemary is scientifically known as Rosmarinus Officinalis. It is now under research and has been found that the rosemary oil improves cognitive performance..

It is found that if you sniff rosemary aromatherapy oil you will feel more satisfied and there will be improvement in your performance. This research is done in Great Britain - in the Brain, Performance and Nutrition Research center at Northumbria University, UK.

20 participants of age 20 years were taken for the study. They kept the rosemary aromatherapy oil in their desk so that they will not feel that they are deliberately exposed to the scent. This is done for 4 to 10 minutes.

These participants were asked to solve simple subtractions and more complicated subtractions and find number patterns in the computer after they were exposed to the scent of the oil. They even did a mood questionnaire and a blood test was also conducted.

The participants who took the scent for lesser time appeared less content. The study also proved that there is no connection between the oil and feeling alert, calm or pleasant which are the other types of moods under study.

Those who are exposed to the scent for more time solved the basic mathematical questions in less than 2 minutes. They did not show any difference in answering the complicated subtractions or the number patterns as compared to those who are exposed for a lesser time.

They used speed and accuracy tests and mood valuations to identify the effects of rosemary oil. They took blood samples to find out the amount of 1,8 Cineole they captivated.

The research said that if they smelled the oil for longer time there are more amounts of 1,8 Cineole, a chemical compound in their blood samples which is normally present in aromatherapy oils.

The results what they obtained show that the amount of this chemical compound has a lot to do with the reasoning ability of the individuals. The results showed an improvement in the performance with higher levels of the compound. It is found that both speed and accuracy improved writing off the actual relationship between speed and accuracy.

It is also found that the chemical had an effect on the mood though not so significant. It has improved the contentment levels of the individual. The compounds of the rosemary essential oil have a significant effect on the personal state and the reasoning ability of the individual by working in varying neurochemical pathways.

They found that the oil however did not have any effect on the alertness or attention of the individual.

Nasal or lung mucosa help the Terpenes like 1, 8 Cineole to enter the blood stream in the form of organic molecules which are soluble in fat. These can easily cut across the blood brain barricade.

This chemical compound in volatile state is found in many plants which are aromatic.

These comprise of eucalyptus, bay, wormwood and sage besides rosemary. This compound is under study by many researchers to find out whether it prevents the enzymes called acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase which are essential for brain and central nervous system neurochemistry.

It is also being studied to find out whether the components of rosemary stop the breakdown of neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

In the words of the research scientist Moss it is said that there is an important relationship between only contentedness and 1,8 Cineole levels.

Based on the reasoning performances of the individuals it is interesting to know that only positive moods can improve performance and not aroused moods.

Rosemary essential oil consists of 35 to 40 percent of 1,8 Cineole which has straight pharmacological characteristics.

The blood samples which are tested for this compound can also be used as an indicator for comparative levels of other compounds of rosemary oil like rosmarinic acid and ursolic acid which are usually present in lesser quantities.

This study is too small to draw inferences and cannot be told how noteworthy these results are. But it can be satisfactorily believed that rosemary aromatherapy oils will set our mood to content.

How to Make Homemade Lip Balm

Quite interesting post. I am not sure if I am into it. A homemade lip balm is something I wouldn't make at home but if you're a DIY crafter then it worth to look at.

The posts says using essential oils as the ingredient, but I think fragrance oils such as strawberry and other fruitty scent is a perfect choice rather than lavender (floral scents). what do you think?

ooops... I forget we do have lemon, orange and tangerine essential oils too. we could use that :)

Citrus essential oils provide a natural antibiotic effect to cows

Experts from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have performed various studies into the non-antibiotic processes to lessen harmful food-borne bacteria (pathogens) which are present in an animal’s gut.

The group of scientists include microbiologist Todd Callaway and animal scientist Jeffery Carroll (team leader) from the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) as well as John Arthington from the University of Florida.

The Agricultural Research Service is the USDA's primary in-house scientific investigation agency who aims to conduct studies which support the Department’s goals of endorsing food security as well as guaranteeing food safety at an international scale.

Early research has revealed that citrus produce are beneficial to cows as they provide ideal roughage and natural vitamins as well as providing a chemical-free antibiotic supply which is featured in the essential oil structure of such products.

Tattoo healing using essential oils

An aromatologist from Wellington has come up with a different use for her essential oils which until a year ago, she was using to cure a number of ailments including depression and stress; she now also uses them to aid tattoos healing process.

Gillian Parkinson's innovative Tinkture Tattoo After Care is a secret blend of therapeutic grade essential and carrier oils which help tattoos to heal quicker as it aids infection prevention and lessens any pain, bruising and swelling that may occur when a new tattoo have been done.

She developed the solution after trying ineffective aftercare merchandise that were on the market at the time which in fact caused her arm to swell up and bruise all the way down to her wrist.

The next time she had a tattoo done, she was not willing to take any chances and so created her own concoction which she found reduced the initial swelling overnight, did not leave any bruising and healed the tattoo within 10 days which even caused the tattoo artist to be amazed. She then tested it out on a range of people and the positive reviews were the encouragement she needed to begin selling her creation.

Her new product has been so well received that it has even won consumer product category of this year's Grow Wellington Bright Ideas Challenge, which recognizes the top innovative business concepts within that region.

One Tinkture user, Char Hillerby, said that tattoos are becoming more symbolic and meaningful now whereas previously they were just a drunken sailors practice. She spoke of the product highly and complimented the fact that it spreads lightly so it does not irritate when applied. Furthermore, the fact that it is vegan is also very appealing to many people who are now opting for vegan tattoos and vegan aftercare.

Essential Oils as a Cleaning Alternative

Essential oils are not just useful for aromatherapy or for their fragrance properties; they can also be used as a natural, non-toxic alternative to harsh, chemical cleaners.

Not only will this give you piece of mind that this method is not harmful to you, your family and your pets, it is also the environmentally friendly way.

You can either buy essential oils from natural shops or online and a small bottle will last you for ages as you only need a few drops!

Here is our list of five essential oils that are most commonly used as natural cleaners:

Eucalyptus - To remove germs, simply wipe down solid surfaces with a few drops of eucalyptus essential oil and/or make a spray with a few drops of the oil in water to disinfect the air. You can also add a few drops to your washing machine hot wash cycle to kill any dust mites that may be residing in your clothing.

Grapefruit - Add grapefruit essential oil to a vodka, vinegar and water mixture and spray on glass windows or mirrors and then wipe down with old newspapers to create a sparkling result with a smudge and streak-free shine.

Lavender - If you are having trouble sleeping, forget buying sleeping pills and soothing music CD’s, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to your bath to soothe and relax your mind or spray some diluted oil onto your bed sheets and pillowcases for a good night’s rest.

Lemon - Not only does lemon smell super fresh but also is great when you put a few drops of lemon essential oil on a cloth or sponge, use this to wipe your stove, sink, work surfaces and stainless steel appliances and then rinse it so that the oil can refresh your drain and pipes as well. Lemon breaks down and combats grease whilst sanitising them to result in a clean and shiny kitchen. Adding a few drops to your dishwasher can remove food smells and freshen it up.

Tea Tree Oil - This essential oil is also known as Melaleuca and is great as a mould-inhibiter so a few drops in your home’s damp areas will help to curb mould growth. You can also mix it with baking soda to create an excellent scrub for stubborn issues with sinks, baths, showers and toilets.

Hopefully, this gives you an insight into just a few ways you can use your favourite essential oils to make your own natural, anti-bacterial, fungicidal cleaning products with the added bonus of a lovely fragrant home. Not only will using these oils make you feel invigorated and calm, it may make you want to clean your house more often!

Essential oils for Fall Season

The fundamental basis of the practice of aromatherapy is essential oils which can be used to help heal, relax and balance your body, mind and hormones but which of these concentrated natural oils are best suited to the fall season?

At this time of year, it is best to look out for plant derived oils which will hydrate and protect your delicate skin from the harsh elements.

Essential oils should always be used externally but, to feel better from the inside, try drinking some Earl Grey tea which is infused with bergamot when you wake up.

For homemade skin care products, lavender, roman chamomile, carrot seed, sweet orange and palmarosa either on their own or blended together for various purposes including:

Massage - add a drop or two to some oil and rub into tired bodies to relax and unwind,

As a sleep aid - the most common method is to put a drop on your pillowcase which will envelop you and help send you into a peaceful slumber,

For inhalation in a diffuser - to create a fragrant peaceful atmosphere in your home or

In the bath - add fours drops of any one or two of the aforementioned oils with one tablespoon of Epsom salts or milk and then add to warm running water as you fill the bathtub.

Because essential oils tend to come concentrated and may be too strong for sensitive skin, it is advisable that the oil is diluted with a vegetable based carrier oil before use.

Carrier oils, which derive from the seeds, kernels or nuts of a plant, carry natural essential oils as well so this will have a double benefit and the best carriers to use are jojoba or rosehip oil for the face and coconut or sweet almond oil for the body.
